Joanna Macy, Rilke and The World

I learned of Joanna Macy through one of my new favorite podcasts, On Being, which explores ethics, faith and ideas. She’s a philosopher of ecology, a Buddhist scholar, and a translator of the poetry of Rainer Maria Rilke. She also worked for the CIA in Germany and lived in India, caring for Tibetan refugees. She has lived the full and varied kind of life that many can only hope to lead by age 81. - – - In her interview with Krista Tippett, Macy notes that we are at a tipping point, where we can either revolutionize the way society works in an effort to heal the world, or continue to plunder and destroy it....

“The Future of the Book” by IDEO

Design and innovation consultancy IDEO has developed three “reading concepts” for the future of digital books: Nelson, Coupland and Alice — rather silly names that seem better assigned to jeans than concepts. What they’re really talking about are three different approaches to hypertext-ifying books. The Children Are Bored on Sundays

“Les enfants s’ennuient le dimanche (the children are bored on sundays)” is a cute short video made for designer eyewear line Oliver Peoples. It stars Shirley Manson of Garbage along with Elijah Wood, a quirky, sexy pair that’s a good match for the brand, which doesn’t seem to be taking itself too seriously. The music is by Zee Avi, who was recently interviewed on Studio 360. There’s a great interview with Police drummer Stewart Copeland on that episode, too, for his new book Strange Things Happen.

Things Recently Bought

Urbanears Headphones in “Ocean” ($54.50) I’ve been looking for headphones off and on for a while. All I’d been using were earbuds, which are terrible for your ears. (I already have tinnitus, and don’t need it to get any worse.) Priority one: they look good. Priority two: they cost under $60. Priority three: they sound good. This [...]

Chronicle Books V-Day Discount

Chronicle Books clearly knows what it takes to stay in the publishing game. They’re excellent at staying connected and relevant, using their online presence for polls and contests — like the recent one that rewarded fans for helping them reach 15,000 followers on Twitter. They also host fun events at their SF offices, like 20×200’s [...]
